Position Summary: 

Perform a variety of duties associated with the departmental Food Safety Quality Assurance Programs to focus on finished product releases but to also include the collection and analysis of data, product evaluation and analysis, and the assistance in further development of policies and procedures. Communicates with line workers, quality technicians, and maintenance personnel to create a pleasant environment and promote good morale.

Primary Responsibilities:

Performs Food Safety and Quality Assurance Functions that include:

  • Maintain calibration schedule for all facilities and equipment'to include NIR equipment, water activity meters, mycotoxin meters, thermometer calibrations, and all internal equipment calibrations.
  • Review all raw ingredient and/or finished product results (physical and/or lab analysis) for the determination of adjustments to current calibrations.
  • Perform data entry, review and analysis as requested by Director of Food Safety and Quality and/or Technical Manager.      
  • Review & interpret moisture, water activity, and other product analysis throughout process (documented procedures) to determine equipment efficacy and set up any corrective actions needed.
  • Measuring of product dimensions--must determine if acceptable within a given specification range.
  • Plan and conduct new hire orientation (as requested), which includes Employee Hygiene, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP's), Facility Sanitation, Food Safety Plan/HACCP, Food Quality Plan and Personnel Safety.
  • Work with Director of Food Safety & Quality and/or Technical Manager to ensure training is conducted according to the training schedule and is documented using our training register and to plan and prepare for upcoming training requirements.
  • Complete monthly GMP Compliance Auditing with paperwork audits.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for all items and maintain all follow-up items.
  • Communicate all quality issues with plant management and quality management.
  • Ensure that all current and future MI's, SOP's, and SSOP's are followed as required.
  • Work with plant management to ensure GMPs are followed.
  • Responsible for reporting and/or correcting any concerns that may possibly affect the quality and/or safety of our products and personnel and initiate action.
  • Work with quality management, production management, production employees and maintenance to keep a view of quality always in focus.
  • The employee will be able to demonstrate the adequate knowledge of Merrick's SQF program and all relative food safety pre-requisite programs.

 Performs other activities as directed by acting manager or supervisor

Basic Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma (or G.E.D equivalent) and 1+ years experience in a related field.
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
  • Experience in food manufacturing (pet or human) or other technical field preferred
  • Proficient in basic math knowledge, strong reading and comprehension skill, and a strong trainable mechanical aptitude.
